"Natural" has no legal definition
Start here, because it's foundational: "natural" in beauty marketing has no regulatory definition in any major market — not the US (FDA), not the EU, not the UK, not Canada, not Australia. No agency audits products against a "natural" standard because no such standard exists.
What this means in practice:
- Any brand can call a product "natural" without verification
- A product can be 99% synthetic and still legally use the word "natural"
- The word can describe a single ingredient, a fragrance, an inspiration, or absolutely nothing specific
- "Natural ingredients" might mean one botanical extract in a synthetic base
- "Naturally-inspired" doesn't mean any natural content at all
This is even less regulated than "clean beauty" (which at least has some retailer-specific definitions). "Natural" is closer to "delicious" or "premium" — a marketing word that does emotional work without verifiable meaning.
This isn't a fringe issue. The natural beauty market is valued at over $40 billion globally. The word "natural" appears on a substantial percentage of beauty packaging. The lack of definition matters because it's the foundation of an entire consumer category.
The "appeal to nature" fallacy
Natural beauty marketing leverages a specific cognitive shortcut philosophers call the "appeal to nature" fallacy — the assumption that natural is automatically better, safer, or more virtuous than artificial.
The fallacy is easy to see when stated plainly: arsenic is natural. Lead is natural. Hemlock, belladonna, and ricin are natural. Mercury comes from the earth. Many of the most dangerous substances in human history are entirely natural. The fact that something occurs in nature tells us nothing about whether it's safe for human use.
Conversely, many of the safest and most rigorously studied skincare ingredients are synthetic or biotech-derived: hyaluronic acid (most cosmetic versions are biotech-produced), niacinamide (synthetic), peptides (laboratory-synthesized), retinol (often synthesized for stability), most preservatives (essential for product safety), and stabilizers that prevent contamination.
The marketing exploits this fallacy because it feels intuitively correct. Natural plants growing in sunshine feel safer than chemicals in a laboratory. The intuition is wrong. The source of an ingredient is independent from its safety profile.
The relevant question for any beauty ingredient isn't "did it come from a plant or a lab?" It's "what does the evidence say about its safety and effectiveness in the form and concentration used in this product?" That question is the same for natural and synthetic ingredients. The answer is what matters — not the source.
Natural ingredients that can harm your skin
The most common skin irritants in beauty are largely natural. Some of the worst offenders:
Essential oils
Concentrated plant extracts that contain dozens of bioactive compounds. Among the most common contact dermatitis triggers:
- Lavender oil — frequently allergenic despite its calming reputation
- Tea tree oil — common contact dermatitis trigger; can cause photosensitivity
- Peppermint and mint oils — irritating to many skin types, especially around eyes
- Citrus oils (lemon, bergamot, lime) — strongly phototoxic; can cause burns and lasting hyperpigmentation when combined with sun exposure
- Ylang ylang — common allergen
- Eucalyptus, rosemary, clove oils — frequent irritants
Lemon juice (citric acid in raw form)
A persistent home-skincare myth. Raw lemon juice is highly acidic (pH around 2), can burn skin, causes severe photosensitivity, and contains compounds that trigger pigmentation reactions. Lemon juice on skin in sunlight can cause phytophotodermatitis — chemical burns that leave dark scarring for months or years. This is one of the most clearly documented "natural is dangerous" cases in dermatology.
Apple cider vinegar
Strongly acidic and frequently recommended in folk skincare for "balancing" skin pH. Applied undiluted, it can cause chemical burns. Even diluted, it disrupts skin barrier function. There is no good evidence it helps acne, eczema, or any common skin concern.
Coconut oil
Not dangerous, but highly comedogenic for many people — meaning it clogs pores and causes breakouts. The "coconut oil cures everything" trend has caused more breakouts than it has cured. Useful for hair and body for some people; problematic for face for most.
Witch hazel
Astringent containing tannins. Can be drying and irritating, especially in alcohol-containing formulations. Frequently recommended for oily skin and acne but often makes things worse by disrupting barrier function.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
Strongly alkaline (pH around 9), well above the skin's natural pH of 4.5–5.5. DIY baking soda scrubs and cleansers significantly disrupt the skin barrier. Despite being "natural," it's one of the worse things you can put on your face.
Certain plant extracts
Arnica, calendula, chamomile, and many other plant extracts can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Most are gentle for most people, but they're not categorically safer than synthetic alternatives.
"DIY natural skincare" using kitchen ingredients is one of the most consistently harmful trends in beauty culture. Lemon, baking soda, raw egg, undiluted apple cider vinegar, sugar scrubs on the face, and toothpaste on pimples can all cause measurable skin damage. The "natural therefore safe" assumption is responsible for a substantial portion of preventable skin conditions seen in dermatology clinics. If a skincare practice involves food from your kitchen, it's almost certainly not what your skin needs.
Natural ingredients that actually deliver
To balance the above — some natural ingredients have genuinely strong evidence. These are worth seeking out:
Centella asiatica (cica, gotu kola)
Among the most well-studied botanicals in dermatology. Strong anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties supported by multiple clinical studies. Excellent for sensitive, irritated, or barrier-compromised skin. Active compounds (asiaticoside, madecassoside) have specific documented mechanisms. One of the strongest cases for a natural ingredient with serious evidence.
Colloidal oatmeal
FDA-approved as a skin protectant. Strong evidence for soothing eczema, dry skin, and irritation. Active components (avenanthramides) have documented anti-inflammatory properties. Used in pharmacy-grade products like Aveeno's range.
Squalane (from olive, sugarcane, or rice)
A lightweight, non-comedogenic plant-derived lipid with excellent hydrating properties. Suitable for most skin types including oily and acne-prone. Sustainable versions (sugarcane-derived) have replaced shark-liver squalene in most modern products. Genuinely useful.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3)
Often categorized with synthetic ingredients, but can be derived from plant sources. The active itself is the same chemical structure regardless of source. Strong evidence for brightening, barrier support, and oil regulation. One of the most well-rounded skincare ingredients available.
Plant oils with documented benefits
Rosehip seed oil (vitamin A precursors), argan oil (fatty acids and vitamin E), jojoba oil (similar structure to skin sebum, well-tolerated), and meadowfoam oil have documented skincare benefits. Quality and processing matter — cold-pressed, unrefined versions retain more bioactive compounds.
Green tea extract (Camellia sinensis)
Strong antioxidant activity. EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) has documented effects against UV damage and inflammation. Useful in antioxidant serums and moisturizers.
Allantoin (from comfrey root or synthesized)
Soothing and skin-conditioning ingredient with good evidence. The synthetic and natural versions are chemically identical.
Glycerin (from plant or synthetic sources)
One of the most studied and effective humectants in skincare. Whether from coconut, soy, or synthetic sources, the molecule is identical and equally effective.
Natural vs synthetic — the false dichotomy
The natural vs synthetic frame is largely artificial. Several reasons:
Many "natural" ingredients are heavily processed
A botanical extract starts as a plant, but reaching the form used in skincare involves extraction, distillation, concentration, stabilization, and often purification. The "natural" extract on your serum label has been through significant processing. There's nothing wrong with this — most natural ingredients require processing to be useful — but "minimally processed" claims are usually false.
Many "synthetic" ingredients are nature-identical
Hyaluronic acid produced by biotech fermentation has the same molecular structure as hyaluronic acid in your skin. Synthetic vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) has the same structure as the vitamin C in oranges. Your skin can't distinguish a molecule based on its origin. Synthetic enables consistency and safety

Some "natural" alternatives are worse for the environment
The environmental cost of producing certain natural ingredients can exceed synthetic alternatives. Squalene from sharks (sustainability disaster), palm-derived ingredients (deforestation), certain rare plant extracts (overharvesting). Synthetic alternatives sometimes have lower environmental impact.
The dichotomy doesn't match how chemistry works
At the molecular level, water is H₂O whether it came from a glacier or a lab. The same is true for many cosmetic ingredients. The categories "natural" and "synthetic" describe origin, not chemistry. They don't predict safety, effectiveness, or environmental impact.
Certifications worth trusting
If "natural" status matters to you, look beyond brand claims to third-party certifications. The most rigorous ones:
COSMOS
The most internationally recognized natural and organic standard. Has two tiers: COSMOS Organic (95% of plant ingredients organic) and COSMOS Natural (no synthetic ingredients except permitted exceptions). Strict third-party auditing. Used across Europe and increasingly globally.
NATRUE
European certification with three tiers (Natural Cosmetics, Natural Cosmetics with Organic Portion, Organic Cosmetics). Strict standards on processing methods and prohibited ingredients. Significant European market presence.
Soil Association
UK certification specifically for organic standards. Strict requirements for organic content. Strong reputation. Used by many UK natural brands.
USDA Organic
US certification, originally for food, now applied to cosmetics. "Made with Organic Ingredients" requires 70% organic content; "Organic" requires 95%; "100% Organic" requires complete compliance. Strict standards.
Ecocert
International certification body (French origin) widely used in beauty. Has multiple standards including their natural and organic certifications. Recognized globally.
ICEA
Italian environmental certification body, widely used in European natural beauty.
Logos to be skeptical of
- Generic "natural" graphics with no certification reference
- Custom brand-applied "natural" badges
- Vague terms like "made with natural ingredients" without specification
- "Inspired by nature" — meaningless
- "Botanically sourced" without identifying which ingredients
Natural isn't the same as sustainable
A common assumption that doesn't hold up to scrutiny: that "natural" beauty is automatically more sustainable than conventional beauty. The reality is more complicated.
Natural ingredients with significant environmental concerns:
- Palm oil and palm derivatives — major driver of tropical deforestation
- Squalene from sharks — historical sustainability disaster (largely replaced now)
- Sandalwood — overharvested; many sources unsustainable
- Frankincense — slow-growing trees, overharvested in some regions

For genuine sustainability, look for ingredient-specific certifications: RSPO (sustainable palm oil), Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), or specific supply chain transparency from the brand. "Natural" alone doesn't address sustainability.
Some of the most sustainable beauty ingredients are synthetic. Biotech-produced hyaluronic acid, squalane from sugarcane fermentation, and lab-synthesized vitamin C often have substantially lower environmental footprints than natural alternatives. If sustainability matters more to you than naturalness, evaluate ingredients on actual environmental data — not on the natural/synthetic label.
The honest case for natural beauty
Despite the marketing problems, there are legitimate reasons to choose natural beauty products:
Some natural ingredients have strong evidence
Centella, oats, squalane, glycerin, and certain plant oils genuinely work. Products built around these as actives can be excellent.
Avoiding specific synthetic preferences
If you have specific allergies or sensitivities to particular synthetic ingredients (certain preservatives, fragrances), natural alternatives that avoid those specific compounds can be useful.
Aesthetic and sensory preferences
Some people simply prefer products that feel "plant-based" — the scent, texture, and sensory experience of natural-formulated products is often pleasant even when the safety case for natural over synthetic isn't strong.
Certified organic content matters environmentally
Organic farming practices have measurable environmental benefits (reduced pesticide use, soil health, biodiversity). Products with certified organic content support these practices.
Supporting smaller botanical brands
Many smaller natural beauty brands operate ethically, transparently, and at small scale. Choosing these supports a diverse beauty ecosystem.
These reasons are valid. "Natural is automatically safer or more effective" isn't.
How to shop natural beauty smartly
Five practical principles:
1. Look for specific certifications, not "natural" claims
COSMOS, NATRUE, Soil Association, USDA Organic, Ecocert provide verified standards. "Natural" alone provides none.
2. Read the ingredient list
The INCI list shows what's actually in the product. Compare what's claimed on the front against what's listed on the back. If the brand prominently features one botanical while the ingredient list shows mostly synthetics, the marketing is misleading.
3. Check the position of "natural" ingredients on the list
Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. If the featured plant extract is the 15th ingredient on the list, it's present in trace amounts. If it's in the top 5, it's a meaningful component.
4. Approach essential oils with caution
Many natural beauty products lean heavily on essential oils. If you have sensitive, reactive, or eczema-prone skin, essential oils are one of the most common irritants. Avoid them in formulations or look for "essential-oil-free" specifically.
5. Patch test everything new
Particularly with natural beauty products that contain botanical extracts, individual allergic reactions are unpredictable. Apply a small amount to your inner arm for 2–3 days before applying to your face.
The bottom line: "Natural beauty" has no legal definition and is the vaguest of beauty marketing terms.
