Men's Grooming

Practical, no-nonsense grooming guides for men — covering skincare basics, beard care, hair loss prevention, and shaving — with the same evidence-based approach we use in every category.

Quick Answer

What's the simplest effective grooming routine for men?

A complete men's grooming routine takes 5 minutes: gentle cleanser in the shower, moisturizer with SPF 30+ in the morning, and a richer moisturizer at night. Add retinol 2–3 nights per week if you're concerned about aging. For beards, weekly cleansing with beard wash and daily beard oil. That's it — anything else is optional.

Frequently asked questions about men's grooming

Do men really need separate skincare products?
Not really — most 'men's' skincare products are identical formulations to women's, just rebranded. The active ingredients work the same regardless of gender. The legitimate differences: men's skin tends to be slightly thicker and oilier, so lighter textures and slightly stronger actives often work well. But you don't need a 'men's' label to get good results.
Does saw palmetto or biotin actually slow hair loss?
The evidence is weaker than marketing suggests. Saw palmetto shows modest effects in some studies but isn't comparable to clinically proven treatments like minoxidil and finasteride. Biotin only helps if you're deficient. The strongest evidence-based hair loss treatments are minoxidil (topical), finasteride (oral), and low-level laser therapy — not supplements.
Is wet shaving better than electric?
It depends on your skin and hair. Wet shaving with a multi-blade razor or safety razor gives the closest shave but can cause irritation on sensitive skin. Electric razors are gentler but less close. For sensitive skin or ingrown hair issues, electric or single-blade razors usually work better than multi-blade wet shaving.
How often should men use moisturizer?
Twice daily — morning and night. The single most impactful skincare step for men is daily moisturizer with SPF 30+ in the morning, which prevents the majority of premature aging. At night, a basic moisturizer maintains barrier function. Anything beyond this (serums, treatments) is optional based on specific concerns.
What ingredients should men avoid in shaving products?
Avoid alcohol-heavy aftershaves, which strip the skin and worsen razor burn. Skip menthol and strong fragrances if you have sensitive skin. Avoid foaming agents like sodium lauryl sulfate in shaving creams. Look for: glycerin, aloe, allantoin, niacinamide, and centella asiatica — they soothe post-shave irritation.
