What is undertone, exactly?
Your skin's undertone is the constant cool, warm, or neutral cast of your skin underneath whatever surface color you happen to have. Surface color changes with sun exposure, age, and seasons. Undertone doesn't.
Why this matters for lipstick: a lipstick that shares your undertone looks like part of you. A lipstick that fights your undertone looks pasted on. The same red can look stunning on one person and harsh on another — it's usually undertone.
The three undertones, plainly

How to use your result
Once you know your undertone, shopping gets dramatically easier:
- Look at the lipstick swatch (a smear on your inner wrist works best). Does it look pink-leaning, orange-leaning, or balanced? Match it to your undertone.
- If a lipstick looks "off" on you — too aging, too harsh, washed out — it's almost always an undertone mismatch.
- Brand color names rarely help. "Classic Red" from two brands might be wildly different undertones. Always check the swatch.
- Lighting matters. Test lipsticks in natural daylight. Store lighting flatters everything and lies to you.
What if you don't fit cleanly into one undertone?
Most people are slightly skewed in one direction with a lot of flexibility. "Neutral" undertone is the most common reality — pure warm or pure cool exists but isn't the norm. If your result says neutral, you can wear nearly any red. If it skews warm or cool, you have a stronger preference but can still occasionally wear the opposite (a stronger formula like matte liquid lipstick is more forgiving across undertones).
The bottom line: Lipstick undertone matching is the single highest-impact skill in lip color shopping. Your veins, your jewelry preference, and your sun reaction tell you everything you need to know. Match the lipstick's undertone to your skin's undertone and most shopping becomes easier. The rule isn't absolute — confident matte formulas can break it — but it's the right starting point.
